CONTRIBUTED Cub Scouts in Richmond County have been busy assembling race cars for a racing event at 3 p.m. on July 18 in downtown Hamlet.
Scouts from Packs 64 of Rockingham and 527 of Hamlet are shown with one of the cars. The business section of Main Street, Hamlet, will be blocked off the afternoon of July 18 to become a race track - the Hamlet Super Speedway. Racing there will be the scout dens in three Cub Scout Packs in Richmond County. Tonya Freeman, Cubmaster for Pack 527, said she is hoping each of the packs involved will be able to produce three cars each to represent each of their three dens.
Cub Scouts ranging in a age from seven to 10 years of age have been planning the derby since April. Some 40 scouts will be involved. Freeman said the cars are similar to the “soap box derby” cars, but not as complex.
“These cars will be constructed of wood and are gravity driven,” she said. Scouts will run their car once down the track. Their time will be logged. The den with the best average will be the winning den. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place as well as for “Best of Show” and “Most Creative.
” Judges will be officers from the Hamlet Police Department. “Due to the generosity of several veterans organizations, we are able to conduct this event with no charge to the scouts,” Freeman said. “We have received donations which will pay for all of the awards for the event.
” She said support has been given by businesses such as Main Street Cafe, Main Street Soda Shop, Maness Tire and Hamlet Police Department. Sponsors include AMVETS Post 316 of Rockingham, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 59 of Hamlet, Sandhills Chapter American Legion Riders, American Legion Post 72 of Aberdeen, American Legion Post 49 of Hamlet and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 72 of Aberdeen. “This event is open to the public, and we invite and encourage everyone to attend and support scouting in the community,” Freeman said.
Registration for the scouts will begin at 3 p.m. with judging for best in show and creative at 3:30 p.m. The race is set to begin at 4 p.m. There will also be a Cruise In featuring classic cars and motorcycles on Main Street.
